Who does what in the X world?

The MIT X Consortium 
--------------------

The X Consortium is responsible for the core distribution of X.  They provide the
central code for X to vendors - including Xlib and Xt.  They also distribute a
sample server, the Athena widget set, and a small set of clients (called the "core
clients" - which includes xmh and xclock).  

The MIT X Consortium also distributes the "contrib" tape, which is full of donated
software.  All of the MIT X Consortium material is available via anonymous ftp from
export.x.org.

Unix International
------------------

Unix International is responsible for the OpenLook graphical user interface standard.
It is an industrial consortium.

Open Software Foundation
------------------------

The Open Software Foundation is responsible for the Motif graphical user interface
standard.  It is an industrial consortium.
